Worn as eyeglasses that obscure a subject’s id, the repurposed goods insert cultural aptitude to Muriu’s lively portraits and are linked to both of those her history and Kenyan daily life, much more broadly. Purple fringe evokes the tassel that hung from her uncle’s Toyota Corolla, which transported the artist dwelling from faculty just about every working day, even though the orange plastic drain catcher references the pleasure identified in sharing chores. She clarifies:

In Kenya, when a team of mates meet, the girls generally get in the kitchen area to thoroughly clean up after the food is done, and as is element of Kenyan lifestyle, clean the piles of dishes by hand. This schedule job abruptly turns into a instant of laughter and stories as the gals mingle and bonds are reinforced…(The portrait) celebrates the African spirit of community as it turns humble sink strainers into vibrant circles of joy.
